Afghans can only achieve piece via dilogue: Iran's parliament speaker

Tehran, IRNA – Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said peace in Afghanistan can be achieved merely through dialog among all political groups.

Qalibaf made the remarks in a meeting with Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in Tehran on Thursday night.

President Ghani was in Iran on Thursday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. After the ceremony which was held at Iran's Parliament, he met Speaker Qalibaf.

Qalibaf pointed to the deep commonalities between Iran and Afghanistan in history, religion, culture and language, depicting them as a proper basis to expand ties in political, economic and cultural areas.

He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran supported any measure which would add to sustainable peace and security and prevent bloodshed in Afghanistan.

The Speaker touched on joint border markets and Iran’s water rights in Hirmand River and highlighted the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan as the source of insecurity in the country.

Ghani, in turn, echoed Qalibaf’s opinions on the commonalities between Iran and Afghanistan as a proper basis to strengthen ties.

Afghan people wouldn’t forget the sympathy and assistance shown by Iran’s people and government in different periods, especially in hosting Afghan refugees, Ghani underlined.

He dismissed war as a solution to the current problems in Afghanistan, saying that slaughtering the innocent wouldn’t compensate the country’s backwardness.

Qalibaf also met Chairman of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh who also attended the inauguration ceremony. The Speaker praised the resistance shown by Palestinian during the 12-Day War, underlining Iran’s commitment to the redemption of occupied Palestinian lands.

Haniyeh pointed to the same topic, thanking Iran’s people and government for their stances in supporting Palestinians in every situation.
